Natural Pigment: My Leather Paints and Dyes

Many of the colors I use are created from scratch, allowing me to control both the exact shade and the ingredients of a dye with greater precision than commercially available leather dyes. The process involves environmentally friendly binders, organic and mineral pigments, natural solvents (most commonly balsam turpentine oil derived from conifer trees), as well as plant-based oils and waxes. To make a paint or dye, the pigment is combined with liquid or powdered binders and blended into an aqueous or oil-based solution.

Spinel – Pigment and Gemstone

The pigment used here is Spinel Green, a naturally occurring crystalline mineral formed through volcanic processes within rock. Spinel is known for its highly variable color spectrum, ranging from red and yellow hues to turquoise and black. Beyond its use in pigment production, spinel is also traded and valued as a gemstone. Pigments derived from spinel are exceptionally lightfast and fade-resistant. The pigments I use, supplied by the company Kreidezeit, are free from harmful substances and are even approved for use in the coloring of children’s toys.
