Hi, I‘m Lillian!
Creative Soul, Wanderer and Artisan Spirit … and a Passionate Advocate of the Slow and Simple.
Lillian Raphaela – that's not just some fantasy brand name I came up with, no. It's actually my real name. Named after my American grandmother and my fathers fascination with some Italian artist, my name is as genuine and out of the ordinary as my biography.
A Wanderer Between Worlds
Having grown up in Germany's Ruhr area, with roots in Latvia and America, wanderlust and itchy feet sure ran in my family. Having entire continents and oceans separate me from parts of my extended family, the travel bug has been a familiar and constant companion in my life. As I grew older, I developed an insatiable curiosity for the world and its people, the different countries and cultures. No sooner had I graduated from school than I packed my belongings and moved to Ireland, a country that had long fascinated me with its myths and legends. Later there would be years during which my apartment was no more than a basecamp, from where to plan and organize my journeys to the deserts, mountains and prairies of the world.
It was an intense and incredibly enriching time, and all the different adventures and experiences I brought back home continue to inspire me and my work, even today.
However, the restlessness eventually subsided and these days I find myself relaxing into a growing inner calm, an okayness with being »right here, right now«. Not that I wouldn't love to explore life in all its diverse mesmerizing aspects still, but I also rather enjoy sitting in my studio, quietly working away, forgetting all concepts of time.
Slow Living. Pure and Simple.
Back in 2019 I moved into a former farm house in the southern Eifel region. It's here, in close proximity to the Moselle river, surrounded by trees, meadows and vineyards, that I create all the pretty things you’ll find in my shop. Whenever I’m not in the studio, working on new designs or processing orders, you’ll likely find me outside, hiking or roaming around, saying »Hello« to the chickens and horses – or else I’m in my garden, where I can spend hours meditatively weeding, planting and harvesting.
Lillian... A nomad at heart with an artist’s soul, seeking peace & adventure, simplicity & the fullness of life.
I am a dedicated child of nature and outdoor enthusiast, with a deep longing for light and color, for freedom and joy. It is immensely gratifying and always an especially happy and joyful moment for me when I find yet another way to incorporate all these different aspects in what I do and create, able to share that »joie de vivre« with you.
Another Adventurous Journey: My Job Life and Career.
My path to creating »LillianRaphaela« was a winding one. Initially drawn to tailoring and fashion design, I later ventured into graphic design and advertising, but soon found myself grappling with the conflict between my personal values, my love for beautiful things, and the not especially eco-friendly mass production and marketing of most of these items. A position as a designer for Spinnrad, a company that advertised its products under the slogan »Dedicated to the Environment and Social Responsibility,« seemed like the perfect way to reconcile my values with my profession. Unfortunately, the company was too far ahead of their time, the world just wasn’t ready for it back in the day, and the company filed for bankruptcy all too soon.
My love for nature and plants then led me to the world of gardens and gardening magazines, collaborating with a garden photographer for many years. Yet my passion for crafting, for creating something more tangible than just photos and layouts, remained strong. My collection of beautiful fabrics, trims and beads that I brought back from my travels grew steadily. And eventually, after discovering leatherwork in New Mexico in 2015, I took the plunge and founded my label, »LillianRaphaela - Maker of Fine and Colorful Things«. A venture that finally allowed me to pour my heart and soul into my work, combining my love for design with responsible craftsmanship.
I am also a certified meditation and mindfulness teacher and a Shinrin Yoku (forest bathing) facilitator. I am in the middle of becoming a psychological counselor, specializing in Nature and Forest therapy – very much looking forward to offering my support in this area soon.
