Keychain FAQ

Yes, many of our leather keychains can be customized by stamping or embossing names or initials directly into the leather. I can apply all letters of the Latin alphabet, numbers, certain special characters, and German umlauts. For fabric or beaded keychains, you have the option of adding metal charms or pendants to the keyring of your chosen model. Additionally, small round leather tags with engraved names or initials can be attached to any of the keychains. Check »Customizing an Item« for more information on the different options available.

While handwashing is recommended to prevent damage or fraying, most of my fabric keychains can be machine washed. Just be sure to remove any loose parts like hooks, metal charms, or tassels before washing. It's best to wash your keychain alongside other fabrics, placed inside a mesh laundry bag or a small pillowcase. This helps ensure the non-removable metal clasp does not come into direct contact with the machine drum or other garments. Wash on the gentle cycle of your washing machine at a maximum of 30-40°C (86-104°F), using a mild laundry detergent. After washing, gently smooth the keychain flat and allow it to partially air dry. While still slightly damp, carefully iron the keychain back into shape on a low setting. DO NOT tumble dry!  You’ll find more detailed info under FABRIC KEYCHAIN CARE INSTRUCTIONS.

Keychains Made from Oiled Leather (Pull-Up Leather): Minor scratches and signs of wear can often be easily removed by simply gently rubbing the leather with the ball of your hand. This leather is very robust, so don't be too shy! If rubbing alone isn't enough, you can also try using a lint-free cloth and a tiny bit of water. Avoid using any regular leather care solutions, whether wax-based or chemical, as these could affect the typical cloudy, vintage look of this leather's surface and cause discoloration.

Keychains Made from Dyed or Painted Leather: These can be cleaned very gently (avoid vigorous rubbing here) using a white, slightly damp, lint-free cloth and a mix of a very mild soap and lukewarm water. Because vegetable-tanned leather retains its open-pore structure even after dyeing, its surface is delicate. Chemical solutions and leather wax must be avoided at all costs to prevent staining or damaging the leather.

Keychains Made from Undyed Natural Leather: This type of leather is best cleaned with a solution made of distilled water and a pH-neutral hand soap or saddle soap. Gently wipe the surface with the slightly dampened cloth and ensure there are no soap residues before applying a good quality leather conditioner (e.g., beeswax cream) for upkeep and protection.

For my beaded keychains, I use wood beads from certified local timber. I purchase these as blanks and hand-paint them with non-toxic, tested organic paints and varnishes. Finished lacquered wood beads are sourced from German manufacturers. They also use wood from controlled sustainable forestry (FSC) and produce their beads according to DIN standards. The used varnishes are sweat, suck, and saliva-proof. Nevertheless, it is generally recommended to keep keychains away from children under 6 years, especially babies. There is always a risk of accidentally swallowing the beads. Keychains are not children's toys!
